My own ramblings

Hollis Chatelain class .  Just came back from a trip to Gualala, Calif. to attend a class with Hollis Chatelaine.  Wow is all I can say.  Well, really, I have never stopped at "Wow", so here's what I really can say!  Read it if you like, it's to share, and I hope you have some fun and even maybe get some inspiration from my ramblings.

Hollis is the best color instructor I've had the privilege of meeting.  Most of the classes I've attended on this concept have been something I could have taught, and given out better information in some cases.  Hollis comes to the world of textiles and threads with the knowledge and skills of an artist.  She fully understands color concepts, and what happens when you mix this color on that color, in all their tints and shades, for all the different possible variations or interpretations.

To sum up I would take the class again and recommend it to everyone.  Each of us was invited to bring 3 to 5 finished quilt tops to have evaluated by the group.  Not for the design or the color or the construction of the quilt, but what the desired end effect was as envisioned by its creator.  We were each given 11 minutes, and we went through at least 3 dozen quilts in two days.  First the quilter would talk, then Hollis would talk and question the quilter.  When requested to do so, we could make suggestions if we liked.  The critiques were awesome.  Every piece, whether it was a traditional, or an art quilt, thousands of pieces or 7 pieces, got an equal amount of time, and some amazing suggestions from Hollis and the class.

And then there was the San Diego Quilt show and Visions Gallery

Not the best show I've seen in San Diego.  There were no dolls, and really not too many vendors. Always fun to be in San Diego, though, and fun to walk around in what was a crappy part of town that has now become home to the newly opened (and relocated) Spaghetti Factory, and lots of other cool spots.  Lots of people, and couples, and lovers walking around looking distinctly happy, and the weather was so gooooooooood.    So I'm glad I saw the show, and I loved using the rented scooter to terrorize at least one other little old lady.  I'd go again.  In a heartbeat.

Oh, and by the way, we made our way back to Rosie's another day and helped keep San Diego green.

Visions Gallery (located on Dewey Road on what used to be old Fort Rosecranz) had a nice show with soft cityscapes as the topic.  Nice work, and one or two pieces were spectacular.    We became good friends with the receptionist/docent and she told us the location in Oceanside will be closing down soon, and all shows will be held in San Diego.   They do draw some good fiber artists, and it would be fun to participate in some of their challenges.  And..... I can always justify a trip down.  Anybody else thinking something similar?

Home again

Some of you know my mother recently fell and injured herself.  She bruised up her face quite awfully and suffered a fracture in her right leg, just below the appliance that fastens her artificial knee to the tibia.  I am glad to say she is progressing and we hope she will be better soon.  She really did have fun getting sympathy from the face.  See?  I came by it honestly!
Hi there. This is me, and this is me doing what I like most - taking pictures, and being the center of attention, so here I am doing both! This top is another of the designer series I'm working on, and the buttons below are also considerations for buttons, although none of them may win out. It's just a lot of fun to play with polymer clay, and with all the lumiere paints, stamps, pieces of silk to encase in all kinds of goupy stuff to create a hard button is just too much fun. If anyone ever wanted to get together for a day and do this, I would be glad to hostess the event.

Following are the photos I took at our August meeting.  Again, I beg your indulgence at my lack of labeling or information.... life has been a trip!
Some of the shots are less than stellar, but I hope you'll enjoying seeing the work of our many talented members of Art Quilts.
